, sam champion and ginger zee. let's go first to sam, our weather editor in new york's columbus circle this morning. sam, good morning. >> good morning, dan and bianna. we're on a side street here. this is andrew. we've been helping him dig out from the snowfall totals. this is his car. we're going to get it out for him this morning. we have the eight inches of snow. andrew, i'll step on the other side of this. and you keep going. we got about that eight inches of snow in new york city. take a look at the snowfall totals we've got on the boards for you this morning. with some places in connecticut coming in about 34 inches of snow. st. james, new york, almost 30 inches of snow. boston right now -- remember, this is a blowing, blowing, driving snow. it's been very difficult to measure. in the entire overnight event of this storm, with 50-mile-per-hour, 60-mile-per-hour winds. we have boston at a preliminary number of about 18 inches. ginger's been out measuring that this morning. and new york city, because it's almost impossible, everything's in drifts and everything was blowing around.

,000 families still without power. our extreme weather team on all of this. ginger zee on the other brewing threat tonight in the weather, but first gio benitez in connecticut, where more than half the town is still in the dark tonight. gio? >> reporter: good evening, david. emergency operation centers like this one are desperately working to get everything back to normal. tonight the rush is on to get the lights back on. to clear the roads and driveway ways ahead of the monday morning commute. in this picturesque, connecticut town of 8,000, more than 80% of the homes lost power in the blizzard. one of the biggest problems, down trees. the phrasiers have been without power for two days. what do you miss most about power? >> yesterday there were some great college basketball games on. missed every one of them. >> reporter: crews are working around the clock to restore the power. you have trees coming down on the power lines. >> correct. that's the biggest problem now. >> reporter: close to 300,000 people are without power in the northeast. and the business northeast airports getting back to

that paralyzing snowstorm in the northeast, more on the way. and abc news meteorologist, ginger zee, who also tracks john schriffen for us, is on the case this morning. ginger, what's going on? >> good morning. it's a relative dusting, compared to what happened last week. but it's going to hit some new areas. let's talk about the area of raleigh because they were prepping for the snow. if they get one to two inches, it's a big deal down there. so, parts of north carolina, south carolina, and virginia, today through early tomorrow, do expect one to three overall. and more like two to four in the mountainous regions. as the low tracks to the north, here's that insult to injury we were talking about, dan. from boston to portland, who got plenty of snow last weekend. about two to four inches. the cape, up through northern maine, four to eight. and even more in the far part of northern maine. behind it will be a whole lot of cold. yesterday, washington, d.c. was 60 degrees. by tomorrow morning, mid-20s. new york, same thing. buffalo will be 11. detroit, 14. look at atlanta this morning. they are a
. our extreme weather team. on it all tonight. we lead off with meteorologist ginger zee who was in boston. new england, hit hardest by the storm. ginger, you're almost buried in the snow. >> reporter: almost. waist deep. this is actually a meet logical dream. look at these big steps that i have to take, one of the countless snow drifts here in boston. this city, officially, had almost 25 inches of snow, making it fifth largest snowfall in boston weather history. >> tell the snow to go away! >> reporter: the snow. the howling winds. the angry ocean. tonight, new england's monster blizzard is well out to sea. but in its wake, horrendous winds. still battering the coast. waves lashing homes. this woman had to be rescue from her home. for those in its path it was a back-breaking saturday spent digging out. 30 million woke up to a foot of snow. 11 million woke up to over 2 feet. in portland, maine, it was the biggest snowfall, ever, at least 32 inches. tonight, at least four deaths are being blamed on the storm. one 11-year-old boy died of carbon monoxide poisoning. after keeping
meteorologist ginger zee in kansas, where there's a state of emergency tonight. ginger? >> reporter: david, for this part of the country, it is weather deja vu. look at these huge piles of snow, still leftover from just a few days ago. record snows back then, and now, here it is, happening again. all the way from here back to texas. it's a textbook blizzard, smothering texas, oklahoma, kansas and missouri tonight. look at this time lapse video. overnight, amarillo disappearing in snow. >> see what it's like so far. here we go. >> reporter: amarillo had more than a foot and a half of snow, blown by gusts of up to 77 miles per hour. huge three to five-foot drifts covering roads and highways. schools and businesses were shut down. texas has called in the national guard to rescue people stranded on the roads. in neighboring oklahoma, families trapped in their cars. like bill thompson, his wife, daughter and two granddaughters, stranded on highway 83. they called for help. >> i don't know how many days or hours we're going to be here. because they can't get to us. >> reporter: they were trapped

to ginger zee. >>> we'll start with lake-effect snow. one of my favorite things to talk about. northern ohio, had up to 15 inches of snow, including chardon, ohio, well over a foot in a lot of places. it was kind of spotty, though, that's how it's going to be today. buffalo, going to get anywhere from 6 to 10 inches. watertown, also. let me put this into motion for you. snowmaker has given chicago some snow this morning. it will reach down into parts of west virginia is going to pick up some snow. even the northeast, by tomorrow, a couple of inches. we call it nuisance snow. rather than a huge snowstorm, by any means. it feels like 12 in chicago. 8, indianapolis. 22, nashville. look at this picture, though, you want to get warm, you go out west. phoenix is 75. l.a. is 75. and a quick look at that super bowl forecast. 65 right around game-time start and then 10:00, 53. that's the big pictu >> couple of really beautiful skies sent to me on twitter. let's get right to it and show you. doesn't it look like a cottonelle commercial or something? like toilet paper in the sky. i see a lot of photos,

in a century. our extreme weather team is on the storm front and abc's meteorologist ginger zee is out where the storm is about to move in. ginger? >> reporter: diane, this may look like a mountain of snow, but it's not. this is 100,000 tons of salt that i'm standing on. i've got some right here in my hand. it is one of so many tools that millions of americans will use as we prepare for this major winter storm. from new york to boston, the winter weather arsenals are prepped and ready for blizzard war. and those in charge of the snowy battle are keeping their commands simple. >> stay off the streets of our city. basically, stay home. >> reporter: in a chaotic salem, massachusetts, supermarket, the fire department was called in because there were just too many people stocking up. what did you get? >> all the provisions, the junk food, the real food. the water. >> reporter: here's how it all goes down. a storm slamming the great lakes now will join forces with another one from the south, and combined, it forms a monster nor'easter that will sit and spin just off the coast. and then there's the

's meteorologist ginger zee with that, as she starts tonight with the pictures from chicago. >> reporter: chicago tonight is in the thick of it. roads caked, the evening drive and the driving snow not pretty. >> it's bad. visibility is really bad. >> reporter: it's all the same storm that sent plows off the road in kansas city. and encased parts of texas and oklahoma. from above, you can see where the snow started and where it stopped. in wichita, the weight of the snow sent it crashing off this building. the snow so heavy and wet in missouri, this building south of kansas city crumbled. and in oklahoma, this roof killed a man after it buckled. >> we haven't had snow here like this in 20 years. >> reporter: shawn obermann fixes roofs for a living. he's had several calls today. >> these roofs here that are flatter, they can't take as much weight. a steeper roof, more pitch, the weight is going to handle it a lot better. >> reporter: get this. a foot of wet snow on your roof can add up to 20 pounds per square foot. that's like having several cars on top of your roof. experts tell us, if you hear an
. look at kansas. a highway of motionless cars stretching out to the horizon. abc's emergency ginger zee is standing in the middle of what would be rush hour in topeka, right ginger? >> reporter: diane, here in kansas, where they have declared a state of emergency, and, yes, this is downtown topeka, main roads, nobody on them. peoples of snow, still very slick. kansas officials and others from here to nebraska, illinois and missouri, asking people to stay off the roads tonight. halted in the heartland. the monster snowstorm made for white-knuckle driving. from cars being pushes and pulled in kansas city, to this car up in flames after revving the engine trying to get up a hill in kansas. inside the behemoth storm, it looked like this. visibility, probably about a quarter mile. and sounded like that -- there we go. thundersnow. highways were shut down from missouri to kansas. >> just lost control. due to the weather condition. >> reporter: scary? >> scary! yes, it is. >> reporter: ice was an issue in parts of arkansas and missouri, where freezing rain made travel dangerous. at the storm's
